Kabul to establish diplomatic ties with new Libyan authorities
KABUL. September 14. KAZINFORM Afghanistan has decided to establish diplomatic relations with Libya's new government, the National Transitional Council, the Pajhwok news agency said on Wednesday citing a Foreign Ministry source; Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.
Pajhwok said Afghan President Hamid Karzai had instructed the Foreign Ministry on Monday to start the process.
After the National Transitional Council led by Mustafa Abdul Jalil took control over the Libyan capital Tripoli, family members of former long-time Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have been reportedly hiding in Algeria and Niger. The whereabouts of Gaddafi remain unknown.
Massive demonstrations against Gaddafi broke out in Libya in mid-February. The international NATO-led military operation began on March 19 following a UN resolution on "targeted measures" against the Gaddafi regime. The sanctions included a total arms embargo, travel bans and a freeze on accounts held by the country's leadership; Kazinform cites RIA Novosti.
