Japan to hold general election Dec. 16 after Noda dissolves Diet on Fri.

TOKYO. November 14. KAZINFORM Japan will hold the first general election since 2009 on Dec. 16 after Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda dissolves the lower house on Friday, top ruling party officials said Wednesday, a move opinion polls indicate could end the DPJ's three-year hold on power.

Noda made the decision, despite simmering opposition within his Democratic Party of Japan, as the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party declared Wednesday it would cooperate with conditions Noda set for a general election, Kyodo reports.

A focus will be on whether the LDP can regain power for the first time since its humiliating loss in the previous election and to what extent fledging small parties can win over voters who have been unimpressed by major parties.
