Isaac storm floods kill two in Louisiana
HOUSTON. August 31. KAZINFORM Two people were found drowned in Plaquemines Parish in Louisiana on Thursday as storm Isaac battered the southern coastal state for another day, quickly flooding homes and forcing evacuations and rescues, Kazinform refers to Xinhua.
The two victims, a man and a woman in their mid 40s, were found in a home in Braithwaite, a community submerged by water that overtopped back levees on the parish line, said reports posted on the website of Nola.com.
The man and woman apparently drowned in their home, according to the report.
Meanwhile, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said the National Guard was working to set up 27 distribution centers to help Isaac victims, including three in New Orleans, the largest city in the state.
A total of 5,761 National Guard troops have been called up for Isaac duty, and that number was expected to hit more than 8,000 by the weekend, the governor said.
Isaac has left more than 870,000 homes and businesses in southern Louisiana without power, but by late Thursday, utility companies in the state had restored power to tens of thousands of people in the area.
Also in the day, New Orleans lifted a dusk-to-dawn curfew that was enacted in Hurricane Isaac's wake.
Hurricane Isaac, which made landfall in southeastern Louisiana late Tuesday, weakened to a tropical storm on Wednesday and was further downgraded to a tropical depression on Thursday.
