IAEA to conduct technical expertise of Semipalatinsk polygon
ASTANA. April 8. KAZINFORM /Kanat Kulshmanov/ The IAEA plans to carry out technical examination of the Semipalatinsk polygon. Deputy Director General of the IAEA Olli Heinonen announced it at a briefing following the meeting with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kairat Umarov in Astana today.
"We plan to carry out technical examination of the former Semipalatinsk nuclear testing site", Olli Heinonen said. "The IAEA has not taken a decision on the issue yet, but we know the Government of Kazakhstan is going to convene a summit in summer regarding this problem", he added.
According to him, his three-day visit to Kazakhstan focused on the issues concerning movement of spent fuel from a reactor in Aktau to Kurchatov and rehabilitation of the Semipalatinsk region.
"The authorities of Kazakhstan are working on this issue at present", he concluded.
