A state of emergency was in force after heavy snowfalls trapped around 900 people in their vehicles on the Napier-Taupo Road.

New Zealand Civil Defence has now registered all those still stuck and has sent them to welfare centers -- where they are expected to remain for at least another night.

MetService said more snow is expected and the weather is unlikely to let up until Tuesday, Kazinform cites Xinhua. See www.chinaview.cn for full version.
