Hijacking attempt averted at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport
MOSCOW. July 30. KAZINFORM An attempt to hijack a passenger jet has been averted at Moscow's biggest air hub, the Domodedovo airport, spokeswoman Yelena Galanova told Itar-Tass.
She indicated that the hijacker was detained in the course of a special operation conducted by the forces of the Russian Interior Ministry' s department for security on transport.
"All the passengers aboard have been freed and no victims have been reported," Galanova said.
The operatives have established that the hijacker, a man born in 1970 and having permanent residence in the city of Mineralnye Vody in Northern Caucasus hijacked the jet at around 15:45 Moscow Daylight Saving Time.
"A passenger claiming possession of information valuable for the Interior agencies addressed the captain," Galanova said. "After the information was received, a decision was taken to taxi the plane together with the passengers to an emergency apron of the airport."
In the course of the taxiing, the malefactor made persistent demands for a meeting with representatives of the agencies of law and order and the mass media.
A passenger inside the jet reported feeling sick after some time and the hijacker let medics get aboard.
"However, disguised as medics were transport police operatives who quickly rendered the criminal harmless," Galanova said.
An investigation has been opened and the Interior officials are considering the institution of a criminal case over the attempt; Kazinform refers to Itar-Tass
