Kenzhebay Madenov was born on February 19, 1925, in Aktai-sai village of Karatobe district, located in the West Kazakhstan region.

From 1950 to 1974, he served in the KGB of the Kazakh SSR in West Kazakhstan and Guryev regions. He passed away on December 26, 1974.

In 1944, at the age of 19, Madenov was appointed platoon commander of the 5th company, 2nd battalion, 1008th regiment of the 266th rifle division.

On April 29, 1945, his platoon was tasked with raising the Red Banner on the top of the Berlin City Hall, the most important administrative center after the Reichstag. The order was carried out with honor, inspiring Soviet soldiers and contributing to the success of this offensive operation.

Information on this operation can be found in Marshal Georgy Zhukov’s “Memoirs and Reflections”, General-Lieutenant F.E. Bokov’s “Spring of Victory”, and “The Storming of Berlin” published by the USSR Ministry of Armed Forces in 1948.

Madenov himself wrote about the battle in Kazakhstan Kommunisti journal in 1970. His name is mentioned in Kazakh history textbooks published in 1985, 1993, and 2004. German journalists Klaus Poche and Hans Oliva also described his feat in the book“When the Night Ended.”

In honor of Kenzhebay Madenov, a memorial plaque was installed in December 2001 on the building of the National Security Committee in Atyrau region, and in 2005 a street in Atyrau was named after him.

Earlier, President Tokayev signed a decree posthumously awarding Kenzhebay Madenov the title of Halyk Kaharmany (People’s Hero).
