HBO documentary claims Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto is Peter Todd
A new HBO documentary suggests that Peter Todd, a Canadian software developer, might be the person behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, reports a Kazinform News Agency correspondent.
The documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, suggests that Peter Todd, one of Bitcoin’s early developers, could be the real identity behind Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin.
The nearly two-hour film, directed by Cullen Hoback, is described as a global investigation aiming to solve one of the internet’s greatest mysteries.
Todd quickly denied this claim on X (formerly Twitter), dismissing the idea that he is Nakamoto. The documentary includes an exchange between Todd and Hoback, where Todd briefly entertains the idea of being Nakamoto, only to later contradict this statement.
The film’s release has sparked criticism online, with many in the crypto community questioning its conclusions. Some argued that the evidence presented in the documentary is not strong enough to definitively link Todd to Nakamoto.
The premiere of Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery aired on HBO on Tuesday, October 8. The film was directed by Cullen Hoback, known for his previous documentary series Q: Into the Storm, which investigated the QAnon conspiracy theory. In that series, Hoback explored how the anonymous figure known as “Q” gained a massive following by spreading conspiracy theories, primarily through online platforms.
The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has been a topic of intense debate since Bitcoin’s creator disappeared in December 2010. Some estimates suggest that Nakamoto, if still alive, could control up to 1.1 million bitcoins, worth around $68 billion. Despite over a decade of speculation, Nakamoto has remained anonymous, with theories ranging from a single individual to a group using the pseudonym.
