The attacks were carried out by a hacker group named LulzSec Brazil. Also under attack were the Federal Revenues Secretariat website and the Portal Brasil page.

The presidency's website was offline for about an hour in the early hours of Wednesday.

The cyber attacks were contained and information on those websites was safe, the presidency's press office said.

Brazil has seen frequent cyber attacks recently. The Brazilian Army's website was attacked earlier in the week, leaking data on some 1,000 employees.
