Waldemar Lorenzana, 71, an alleged drug-gang leader, was detained when he was driving in the El Jicaro town, some 100 kilometers east of Guatemala City, Interior Minister Carlos Menocal told a press conference.
Menocal said Lorenzana's capture was "very important because he is related to the Sinaloa drug cartel," which smuggles drug from Colombia through Guatemala and Mexico to the United States.
Lorenzana has been wanted by the Guatemalan authorities and the United States for years. The U.S. government has put up a reward of 500,000 U.S. dollars for information leading to his capture.
