Govts of 8 countries begin fishery talks in Russia’s Far East
VLADIVOSTOK. September 5. KAZINFORM Governments of eight countries - Russia, the U.S., Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Canada, and the Faroe Islands - have begun talks in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the capital of the Russian Far-Eastern insular region of Sakhalin on managing fishery activities in the northern sector of the Pacific; Kazinform refers to Itar-Tass.
This is the ninth round of consultations on setting up an organization that would monitor fisheries in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
The consultations in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk will continue through to Thursday, September 9, the press service of the Sakhalin Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanic Studies /SAHNIRO/ said.
September 10 and September 11, the city will also host the 21st session of the Russian-U.S. Intergovernmental Consultative Committee on Fisheries.
Its agenda envisions discussion of a number of problems in the field of the fishing industry , including the struggle with unauthorized, unreported and unregulated fishing, as well as a number of issues in the field of fishery economy.
The Russian delegation at the talks is led by Deputy Director General of the State Agency for Fisheries, Sergei Podolian.
The first round of consultations on setting up an organization that would regulate fisheries in northern Pacific was held at Japan's initiative in 2006.
