Freight flow through Kazakhstan to increase by 10 million tons by 2020

ASTANA. KAZINFORM - The freight flow through Kazakhstan is supposed to increase by 10 million tons by 2020, vice president of "Kazakhstan Temir Zholy" Bauyrzhan Urynbassarov told at the international press conference called "transport corridors of Eurasia: New ways of cooperation" today.

"We set a task to attract additionally at least 10 million tons to the transport corridors of Kazakhstan by 2020. Presently, the freight flow is at the level of 117 million tons. Moreover, 90% of the total volume falls at sea transport," he said.

He noted that attraction of the transit freight flow through the territory of Kazakhstan requires development of national transport and logistics infrastructure and its integration into the international transport system. In this regard, "Kazakhstan Temir Zholy" JSC implements a large scale program for 2020 with the total volume of investment reaching 36 billion US dollars. It also includes implementation of big investment projects aimed at removal of infrastructural restrictions and development of competence allowing to provide all the necessary competitive service and increase the volume of freight flow.

"In order to increase the transport and transit potential of land transport corridors, Kazakhstan and China have already created the railway logistics infrastructure of two border-crossing points that allow to ensure cargo traffic at the level of more than 140 million tons," the vice president of the company informs.

"In 2014, the new railroads that optimize the routes connecting north and south and east and west by more than 1000 km were commissioned. The positive effect of the launch of these new routes will be the reduction of transport costs by 30%. Besides, the delivery time will be reduced to three days, and it is going to result in increasing of the transit potential of the country," he informed.
