Foreign visitor spending in Japan through Sept. surpasses all of 2023

Spending by foreign visitors to Japan reached 5.8 trillion yen ($39 billion) for the first nine months of 2024, surpassing the previous full-year record high of 5.3 trillion yen hit last year, government data showed Wednesday, Kyodo reports.

The increase is given by the yen depreciation, which gives visitors from overseas more purchasing power, and the growing popularity of the country's anime, manga and other subcultures.

In addition, the number of foreign visitors to Japan tops 2.9 million, record for August.
