Five-year-old boy being tested for Ebola virus in New York

The boy has a low-grade fever and the test results are expected by early afternoon, city Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said on MSNBC today. The boy was taken to the hospital by emergency responders in full protective gear, Bloomberg reports. The fever "triggers the fact that we're going to keep him in the hospital and test him," Bassett said. The patient was in one of the Ebola-affected countries in West Africa within the past 21 days, according to a statement from Bellevue. Craig Spencer, a 33-year-old emergency-room doctor, on Oct. 23 became the first in New York City to test positive for Ebola after he returned from Guinea. He had been working with Doctors Without Borders fighting the deadly virus. Ebola has infected about 10,000 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia and killed about half, according to the World Health Organization. In the U.S., one man who traveled from Liberia died while two nurses who treated him contracted the disease but survived.
