The decision was agreed by senior diplomats holding a emergency meeting on Monday as international concern mounts at the escalation in violence in Egypt.

The EU promised Egypt in November a total of 5 billion euros in grants and loans for a series of initiatives for Egypt.

Before Monday's meeting of the senior diplomats of the EU member states, it was reported that they might recommend a suspension of EU's Egypt aid as a result of the police crack-down in Egypt which has led to hundreds of deaths.
