EP and EC Presidents welcome results of referendum in Ireland on Lisbon Treaty
BRUSSELS. October 5. KAZINFORM /Yerzhan Ospanov/ Chairpersons of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek and European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso welcome the results of the referendum in Ireland on the Lisbon Treaty which is expected to become a new basic treaty called to replace the failed draft EU Constitution.
"I sincerely welcome the results of the Ireland referendum. The Irish people have demonstrated true adherence to the European projects. They confirmed their wish to be in centre of Europe. This is good news for Ireland and Europe", President of the Euro Parliament J. Buzek said. According to him, the European Union will be more efficient and cooperation will be more fruitful.
In turn, Chairman of the EC Barroso said "Thank you, Ireland! This is a great day for Ireland, this is great day for Europe!"
Over 60% of the Irish people voted in favor of the new document. 32.9% voted against the Treaty. In whole 58% of the voters participated in the referendum.
As is known, over 50% of the Irish population rejected the document last June.
The new document was signed at the EU summit on Dec 13, 2007 in Lisbon. Its adoption provides for introduction of amendments to the current agreements on the EU for reforming the system of the EU administration. It also provides for introduction of the post of the EU President who will be elected for the term of 2.5 years. The EU President will represent the Union in its foreign policy.
