One person had been pulled alive from the water as of Thursday evening after the vessel Easy Rider capsized at midnight Wednesday, Radio New Zealand reported.

According to Xinhua, emergency services, as well as coastguard and local fishing vessels and helicopters, were involved in the search, said the report.

Fairfax NZ News reported the boat was understood to have been heading to the Ruggedy Islands when it struck trouble.

It was believed the boat left the South Island port of Bluff at 8 p.m. Wednesday, but failed to make a rendezvous at Stewart Island at 2 p.m. Thursday.
