The announced was made as more police gathered to protest against an unpopular austerity bill in front of the country's parliament.

The state of emergency gives the military the responsibility to maintain security in the country instead of the police.

The September 30 revolt, during which President Rafael Correa was assaulted in a police barracks, was triggered by police protesting against cancellation of some of their benefits. According to official reports, at least one person was killed. Kazinform cites RIA Novosti. See www.en.rian.ru
