Crackdown on Georgian opposition outrageous abuse - Russian FM
MOSCOW. May 27. KAZINFORM Moscow regards the crackdown on the Opposition in Georgia as an outrageous case of abuse of human rights, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday; Kazinform refers to Itar-Tass.
"The use of force by Georgian police against demonstrators in Tbilisi was an outrageous violation of rights to peaceful assembly and the freedom of expression of opinion," he said.
The diplomat said that "the world community has more than once drew the attention of the Georgian authorities to the impermissibility of the excessive use of force against peace demonstrators."
"The corresponding recommendations have been formulated when Georgia underwent the first phase of the UN Human Rights Council's periodical universal review in January,' Lukashevich recalled. "The council then deservedly criticized the Georgian authorities and voiced a number of critical remarks."
