Concern over Islamic State's possible operations near CIS borders
MOSCOW. KAZINFORM - A certain probability that the area of influence of the Islamic State organization may spread into the post-Soviet space persists. The statement was made by Andrei Novikov, head of the CIS Antiterrorism Center, at the session of the Council of heads of security agencies of the CIS member states in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 26 May, BelTA has learned.
According to the source, analysts of special services believe that the relocation of international terrorist forces closer to the CIS borders coupled with the simultaneous aspiration of terrorist organizations led by the Islamic State to launch possible armed attacks in countries bordering on the CIS states may worsen the operational environment in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Specialists are particularly concerned about the intensifying recruitment efforts of the Islamic State and the redeployment of militants of international terrorist organizations from Central Asia to the armed conflict zone in the Middle East.
Participants of the session of the Council of heads of security agencies of the CIS member states discussed a number of measures suggested by the CIS Antiterrorism Center, including joint measures meant to counteract potential terrorist threats to the CIS states on the part of the Islamic State. The measures are also meant to prevent the terrorist organization's operations from spreading into the CIS states, BelTA reports.
