Collapsed pipe at ArcelorMittal Temirtau plant was faulty

KARAGANDA. July 11. KAZINFORM - Irregularities in the construction of the pipe caused a major accident at the metallurgical plant of "ArcelorMittal Temirtau" JSC, concluded the Special Commission.

"There were irregularities in the pipe's construction. When it was being erected in the 1960s, instead of refractory bricks the builders used a different material. As a result, the temperature difference failure occurred inside the tube. In addition, on the day of the accident there was strong wind" said the deputy head of the Emergency Department of Karaganda Oblast Vladimir Pfarger.

According to him, the Commission has worked out three versions. "As a result, we have come to this conclusion," said the deputy chief of Emergency Department.

He said that the pipe had been built 48 years ago. According to the documents 25 years after there was a commissioning for internal inspection of the pipe.

"The specialists examined externally other pipes of the plant. Such deviations from the project have not been identified", said V. Pfarger.

We are reminding that on June 26, 2013 at 16.15 p.m. the destruction occurred and a popping in a concrete chimney of "ArcelorMittal Temirtau" JSC plant. 90-meter-long tunnel designed to remove the products of combustion from the heating walls of coke oven battery number 5, was destroyed by three-quarters.

The accident led to a restriction of the blast, blast furnace and rolling facilities' functioning.

There have been no victims.

A special commission to investigate the causes of the accident has been created.
