CIS countries ready to step up cooperation
MINSK. September 5. KAZINFORM CIS countries confirm readiness to strengthen cooperation in the Commonwealth, chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev told a press conference in Dushanbe on 3 September, BelTA has learned.
"In spite of problems, which we don not conceal and discuss, the Commonwealth is moving forward. Today heads of the delegations pinpointed the necessity not only to preserve the CIS but also to strengthen and develop it," Sergei Lebedev said.
Moreover, he noted that the delegations agreed to set forth CIS development prospects and discuss the mechanisms of development after 2020. "We have discusses a number of our programs which are scheduled for implementation after 2020. Today we also focused on the necessity to foster cooperation in the longer term," Sergei Lebedev said.
According to BelTA, Sergei Lebedev added that at the session President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev confirmed readiness to hold an informal summit in Moscow in December 2011. At the summit the heads of state are expected to look into the 20-year period, the year 2011 and exchange opinions on burning issues of integration cooperation within the CIS, according to Sergei Lebedev.
He also said that Turkmenistan will take over the presidency in the CIS in 2012. The relevant decision was made at the summit of the CIS heads of state in Dushanbe. "Turkmenistan is chosen to take over the presidency in the CIS in 2012," Sergei Lebedev said. The next CIS summit will take place in November 2012 in Ashgabat.
