China invests USD 4.5 bln in Xinjiang civil aviation development

BEIJING. February 8. KAZINFORM /Ruslan Suleimenov/ Four new airports will be built in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China in accordance with the country's 12th five-year program (2011-2015). Six existing ones will be modernized.

CNY 30 billion or USD 4.56 bln is expected to be invested in this project, local media inform.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China says the number of civil airports in Xinjiang will be increased from 16 to 22 by 2015.

As for 2010 results, the airports of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region handled 11.7 mln passengers last year. Implementation of the above-mentioned program will allow raising this figure up to 20.4 mln people by 2015. Cargo transportation is planned to be raised up to 204 thousand tons (101.5 thousand tons in 2010).
