Child liver transplantation conducted in Astana for the first time ever
ASTANA. November 1. KAZINFORM - In Astana on the base of the Republican research center of emergency medicine liver transplantation operation has been held from a living donor to a child, www.astana.kz reports.
Such a complex operation has beenconducted in Kazakhstan for the first time ever. Specialists of the center together with their colleagues from Belarus were performing recovery of a part of donor liver over 12 hours and then transplanted it to a 6-year-old Ilya Panikhin from Pavlodar.
For several years the child had been suffering from hepatic failure leading to cirrhosis. His 32-year-old aunt (his mother’s sister) became a donor for him. Throughout a month the child was in an intensive care unit.
As of today the patient’s condition is stable, he has been transferred to the department. And the donor was discharged to out-patient treatment two weeks after the operation.
It’s worth noting that there are about 100 children in Kazakhstan who need organ transplantation. The main problem of today is the lack of organs for transplantation and the lack of specialists with experience in the sphere of child organ transplant.
