According to "Liter" newspaper, the Caspian Sea and its coastal zone have over 80 sunken and abandoned ships and metal constructions. It should be noted that about 60% of the ships contain petroleum products, waste and garbage. As sources of man-made pollution and contamination, the ships make some negative impact on the hydrological and hydrochemical condition of the Ural-Caspian basin. Lifting and removal of wrecks is supposed to be carried out in a staged manner. It is expected that the work will be done within 35.5 months. The metal scrap will be disposed of in special landfills. The work is scheduled to start in 2016.
