BSU Lyceum team second at International Zhautykov Olympiad in Kazakhstan

MINSK. January 22. KAZINFORM - A team of students representing the Lyceum of the Belarusian State University (BSU) won silver at the 10th International Zhautykov Olympiad in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.

The competition was held in Almaty from 13 to 18 January, Kazinform has learnt from BelTA.

First prize place went to students from the National Specialized Physics and Mathematics Secondary Boarding School for gifted students named after Orymbek Zhautykov (Kazakhstan). The Belarusian team together with students from Sofia's High School of Mathematics (Bulgaria) were second. The Grand Prix was claimed by the Russian team representing the Advanced Educational and Scientific Center of Moscow State University named after Mikhail Lomonosov (Russia).

At this year's competition Belarus was represented only by students from the BSU Lyceum. They also competed in individual events and won seven medals. Andrei Ilyin and Vadim Matskevich claimed silver medals in the computer science competition. Alexei Gorlach (physics) and Valentin Vityaz (mathematics) also won silver. Mathematics bronze was taken by Varvara Kuzmitskaya and Roman Marchenko while Konstantin Politai bagged bronze in the physics competition. Results from the individual competitions were taken into account when deciding each team's place in the overall standings.

Mathematics teacher from the BSU Lyceum Tatiana Bakhtina was responsible for the preparation of the Belarusian team.

Taking part in the 10th International Olympiad named after famous scientist and mathematician Orymbek Zhautykov were 59 teams from 17 countries, including Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Indonesia, India and Mongolia.
