Belarus' initiative on UN-CSTO joint peacekeeping efforts hailed as success

MINSK. January 24. KAZINFORM Deputy Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Valery Semerikov praised the successful implementation of the initiative to expand cooperation between the United Nations and the CSTO in peacekeeping. The initiative was put forward by President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in 2011the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Belarus informed.

Valery Semerikov voiced his opinion at a meeting with Resident Representative of the Republic of Belarus in the UN Andrei Dapkyunas in New York on 22 January. Valery Semerikov is in New York for the talks with top officials of the UN Secretariat. The parties are to discuss ways to expand cooperation between the CSTO and the UN in peacekeeping, according to BelTA.

Valery Semerikov praised the successful implementation of the Belarusian initiative, including the signing of the Belarus-initiated memorandum of understanding between the CSTO Secretariat and the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations in 2012.

Andrei Dapkyunas said that Belarus has always supported the efforts of the CSTO and UN aimed to find efficient ways to step up cooperation, including in peacekeeping. The Belarusian diplomat assured that Belarus will keep supporting such efforts in close cooperation with all the countries that have friendly relations with the CSTO.

The parties also shared views on promising areas and forms of cooperation between the UN and the CSTO in this field.
