BASKAMYR

kamyr is a medieval town at the 83 km of Zhezkazgan town of Karaganda region on the left side of Zhezdy River.

Baskamyr town covers remains of the medieval castle enclosed by three heavy walls with citadel and flanking towers including 2 crypts, cemetery, stone watchtower with the height 3.5 m, canals and etc.

The town has a square form with the walls amounted to 80 m. The citadel is located in the center of the city surrounded by town ditch and clay embankment. There is a hole in the north corner where drinking water was kept. Some fragments of the towers with the height of 2.3 m remained in the corner of the citadel. A lot of woodworks, metallic objects were found in the towers.

Baskamyr town is identified as town of VIII-XI centuries. For the first time the town was studied by archeologist A. Margulan then by S. Zholdasbayev and Zh. Smailov. According to them the town was connected with constructive activity of Kypchaks. Baskamyr Museum was established on April, 13, 1994 in Taldyssai boundary of Ulytau municipality, Karaganda region.
