YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. January 16. KAZINFORM A one-year-old baby died in a fire overnight in the Sakhalin Region in Russia's Far East, a local emergencies ministry spokeswoman said on Friday.
"The call about the house fire came in at 00.20 local time (14:20 GMT). The parents and their children, aged 9, four and one, at the time were asleep, the strong smell of smoke woke the older children who called the neighbors for help and they called the fire service," the spokeswoman said.
When fire fighters arrived the kitchen was completely ablaze and a 20 sq meter area was engulfed in thick smoke, the spokeswoman said.
"The fire fighters managed to get the apartment owner out, who suffered burns to his hands, but could not save the baby girl. She suffocated before the fire fighters arrived. The mother suffered cuts as she jumped through a window trying to get out of apartment. The little girl's parents were both drunk," she said.
She said that an investigation was trying to establish the cause of the fire, but that it was most likely to be a short circuit, Kazinform refers to RIA Novosti.
