Astana Summit to give strong impulse to ensuring security and development of cooperation in OSCE responsibility area - Kanat Saudabayev
ALMATY OBLAST. July 17. KAZINFORM /Daniyar Sikhimbayev/ The forthcoming OSCE top-level summit is expected to become a milestone in the Organization's history after 11-year interval. OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Secretary of State-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kanat Saudabayev has said it upon completion of the informal meeting of the OSCE Foreign Ministers at Ak-Bulak ski resort zone today.
"We believe that the Summit will give a strong impulse to ensuring security and development of cooperation in the OSCE responsibility area", K. Saudabayev said.
The two-day meeting focused on the issues regarding security in OSCE region including Kyrgyzstan, search for solutions of the problems through the Corfu process and the decision on holding the OSCE Summit.
Taking the floor at today's meeting President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said: "The OSCE must prove it was an efficient and authoritative Organization not only in Cold War years. It remains an actively developing structure today".
"Holding the Summit of the OSCE Heads of State in 2010 will give a unique chance to demonstrate evolution of the Organization "from Helsinki to Astana", the Kazakh President noted.
At the meeting N. Nazarbayev announced that Kazakhstan would render USD 10 mln aid to Kyrgyzstan including construction materials and fuel.
In turn, Kanat Saudabayev informed the meeting participants of the measures taken within Kazakhstan's OSCE chairmanship for stabilization of the situation in Kyrgyzstan in close cooperation with the international community and an intention to send the OSCE police advisory group to Osh and Jalalabad regions of Kyrgyzstan.
Secretary General of the OSCE Marc Perrin de Brichambaut said the meeting in Almaty and the initiated summit were a chance to restore the situation in the Organization when all its member countries were sharing the commitments within the OSCE. This will also help solve the problematic issues relating to protracted conflicts and control over armament and counter common challenges like transnational crimes, the Afghan situation and the Kyrgyz problem.
