As of January 2, 2015, Armenia receives full-scale membership and becomes the fourth member of the union in line with the treaty inked on October 9, 2014. Recall that the EEU foundation treaty was signed in Astana on May 29 by presidents of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus. The EEU was launched on January 1, 2015 with an integrated single market of more than 170 million people. It was President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev who first suggested the idea of creating a regional trading bloc during a speech at the Moscow State University back in 1994.
