The Saudi Press Agency met with Saudi calligrapher Seraj Al-Amri at the workshop on Arabic calligraphy he conducted for a diverse audience, composed primarily of youth and children, as part of the ongoing Al-Majaridah winter festival.

Al-Amri emphasized his interest and dedication to promoting Arabic calligraphy and teaching it to the younger generation. This commitment led him to participate in festivals, such as this, that bring together diverse segments of society.

According to Al-Amri, there is a strong desire among many individuals to learn the principles of Arabic calligraphy, especially in an era dominated by technology that has significantly reduced the need for handwriting.

For Al-Amri, "Arabic calligraphy has become a sanctuary. Whenever I experience emotional distress, I turn to my pen and canvases. The moment I begin to write, I feel an immediate and profound sense of mental and physical relief".

He said that practicing calligraphy cultivates patience, enhances workmanship, and teaches time management.

When it comes to methods of and approaches to learning Arabic calligraphy, Al-Amri believes that what is essential is the genuine desire to learn.

As for his part in trying to show the beauty of calligraphy, he said he incorporates it in everyday items found in households, such as cups, pens, clocks and even clothing.

He and his fellow calligraphers were overjoyed when the Ministry of Culture announced that it was designating 2021 as the Year of Arabic Calligraphy. He believes that their active participation in various events accompanying this cultural initiative reinforces the authenticity of Arab culture in Saudi Arabia.
