Anti-Russian sanctions have no direct effect on Kazakhstan - President Nazarbayev
ASTANA-ULYTAU. KAZINFORM - Head of State Nursultan Nazarbayev explained what consequences the anti-Russian sanctions will have for Kazakhstan and how it can be minimized.
The Kazakh President noted that Western sanctions against Russia affect many sectors of its economy. "It is likely that some of the Russian manufacturers will not be able to work in full force and effect. That means they will not be able to buy our raw materials to the extent they used to. And that may pose certain challenges," Nursultan Nazarbayev said in an interview with Khabar TV Channel. "On the other hand," President Nazarbayev added, "Russia responds to Western sanctions with import bans. And that opens certain opportunities for Kazakhstan, for instance to step up exports of vegetables, fruits, meats, etc." The Kazakh leader also expressed confidence that a peaceful solution to that situation will be found. "Anti-Russian sanctions do not have direct effect on Kazakhstan. The issue of Kazakhstan joining the WTO is still on the table. We are also planning to continue cooperation with the European Union and signing the new cooperation agreement," the Head of State noted.
