Anti-nuclear initiatives of President Nazarbayev in the spotlight of int'l forum in Russia

ASTANA. November 7. KAZINFORM International conference "Nuclear security in the modern world. The role of parliamentarians in the process of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation" organized by the Majilis (Lower Chamber of the Kazakh Parliament) and the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly is set to be held in Saint Petersburg on November 29, the chamber's press service informs.

A session of the organizing committee chaired by Majilis Speaker Nurlan Nigmatulin took place in Astana on Thursday to discuss the agenda of the forthcoming conference and its preparation. The problems of global security, illicit production, circulation and transfer of nuclear weapons, contribution of the CIS parliamentarians to non-proliferation, control over nuclear materials and other topics are to be debated at the forum.

Addressing the members of the organizing committee, MP Nigmatulin noted: "The upcoming conference is of paramount importance as the anti-nuclear initiatives of President Nazarbayev, especially the "ATOM" global project, will be in the center of attention of the CIS parliamentarians. The forum will bring together eminent parliamentarians, politicians, scientists and experts in the sphere of nuclear disarmament from many countries of the world".

Those present expressed confidence the conference will greatly contribute to the development of new mechanisms to prevent nuclear threats and the consolidation of efforts to create a nuclear-free world.
