Anomalous heat may become normal by 2070 – UN experts

"The heat in Russia is beating records, and its anomaly is that it is too long," he said.

"The longest heat wave in Russia was registered in 1936, but it has never happened so that such periods last over a month," the radio reported.

Scientists "cannot forecast when and how the number of such waves may grow in future," Kokorin said.

Experts analysed the heat wave in France in 2003, which killed thousands, and believe that such heat may become normal by 2070 if greenhouse gases are not limited. WWF analysts say such phenomena may become a norm earlier than in 2070.

In Russia, various dangerous hydro meteorological phenomena, like heat or cold waves, become more frequent than earlier.

"Today, there is one dangerous hydro meteorological phenomenon a day in Russia, but in 15 years they may double," the United Nations Radio quoted Kokorin as saying; Kazinform cites Itar-Tass.
