AKHMET ZHUBANOV

AKHMET ZHUBANOV (1906-1968) – Scientist, composer, band-master, people?s artist of Kazakhstan, doctor of art criticism, professor, member of the Academy of sciences of Kazakhstan.

He was born in Aktubinsk oblast. Graduated from the Leningrad musical college named after M.Glinka (violin), the Conservatory named after N.Rimski-Korsakov, the postgraduate studies of the Leningrad Academy of arts. He worked in Almaty musical-drama College. A.Jubanov formed the first musical dictionary in Kazakh language. During 1930-s organized and managed the musical cabinet and experimental workshop of Kazakh music researches, contributed to the opening of arts criticism section in the Kazakhstan branch of the Academy of sciences of the USSR (modern musical division of the Institute of literature and atrs). He contributed a lot to the formation and development of the Kazakh people?s musical art. A.Jubanov created the dombra ensemble, which further transformed to the Orchestra of the Kazakh people?s instruments named after Kurmangazy. In this period he arranged musical creations of people?s composers. He was the art director and band-master of the Kazakhstan Philharmonic. In 1945-1951 he was the Head of the Almaty Conservatory (modern Kazakh National Conservatory named after Kurmangazy), in 1954-1961 he was the Head of the Chair of people?s musical instruments, taught the history of Kazakh people?s music, band-mastering, orchestration. In 1961-1968 he was the Head of the musical division of the Institute of literature and arts. He is the author of many scientific works of history of Kazakh people?s music, researches of peoples composer?s and singer?s works: ?Kurmangazy?, ?Life and work of people?s composers?, ?Strings of the century?. He recorded and published musical creations for dombra, kobyz, and sybyzgy, arranged orchestra people?s instruments and kuis. A.Jubanov is widely famous as composer. He is the author of music for G.Musrepov play ?Kozy Korpesh ? Bayan Sulu?, for M.Akhinjanov?s ?Isatai ? Makhambet? (together with M.Gnesin), for the song ?Our city?, for instrumental compositions ?Tadjik dance?, ?Kazakh dance?, ?Aria?, for symphonic poems ?Tolegen Toktarov?, ?Abai?, for vocal creations ?Klyatva?, ?Letter from front? and others. In 1944 he wrote the opera ?Abai? (together with L.Khamidi), radio opera ?Kurmangazy? (which was finished by his daughter Gaziza Jubanova). For his book ?Century bulbuls?, which was named by academic M.Silchenko ?the encyclopedia of Kazakh musical culture?, A.Jubanov was awarded with Kazakh Academy of sciences prize named after Sh.Ualikhanov The Republic musical School ? hostel and Almaty street were named after A.Jubanov.
