Afghanistan suicide bomb 'kills top MP' at wedding

KABUL. July 14. KAZINFORM A well-known Afghan politician and at least 20 other people have been killed in a suicide attack, police say.

Ahmad Khan Samangani was said to be attending a wedding party for his daughter in Aybak, the capital of northern Samangan province, when the blast happened.

According to a local television station he was embraced by a man who then detonated explosives he was carrying.

Mr Samangani was a military commander in northern Afghanistan and an MP.

Ghulam Mohammad Khan, the criminal director of the provincial police, told Associated Press that other government officials were killed in the blast and more then 40 people were wounded.

Among those wounded was a senior police commander related to Mr Samangani, the agency said.

The attack comes a day after a prominent female Afghan politician was killed in a bomb attack in eastern Laghman province.

The politician, Hanifa Safi, was the provincial head of the Afghan ministry of women's affairs and was known as a leading advocate of fair treatment for women, Kazinform cites BBC News.
