About 30 people arrested in U.S. corruption, money-laundering probe

WASHINGTON. July 24. KAZINFORM The mayors of two major New Jersey cities were arrested Thursday in connection with a major corruption and international money laundering investigation, authorities said.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said about 30 people, including Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano and Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, were arrested in New Jersey and New York as a part of the probe.

Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt and Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini also were arrested in connection with the investigation, federal prosecutors said.

The U.S. attorney's office in Newark, N.J., said the two-track probe involves a "high-volume, international money-laundering conspiracy."

Several rabbis in New York and New Jersey were also arrested in connection with the investigation, federal prosecutors said.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who has fought corruption in New Jersey's largest city, said it's "an unbelievable morning so far."

A news conference was scheduled for noon Thursday at the U.S. attorney's office in Newark, Kazinform refers to Xinhuanet.
