Abortion statistics in Kazakhstan remains alarming
ALMATY. September 10. KAZINFORM /Yelena Ilyinskaya/ - 60 thousand abortions have been performed within seven months in 2009 in Kazakhstan. In the entire period of 2008 they reached 123 thousand.
The abortion rate in Kazakhstan exceeds the rate in the economically developed countries. Despite abundance of information resources there is low level of contraception literacy among the population. Only 466 thousand women countrywide use contraception. Chief external specialist of the Almaty Health Department on child and juvenile gynecology Elnora Shakaraliyeva announced this Thursday at the press conference devoted to the World day of Contraception.
In the entire world 80 million women face the problem of unplanned pregnancy, and 20 million women commit abortion, and as a result 68 thousand of them die. This is the problem that both developed and developing countries face. Out of 28 million pregnancies in industrially developed countries, approximately 49% are unplanned and 36% end with abortion.
According to Shakaraliyeva the abortion statistics in Kazakhstan remains alarming due to the low contraception literacy among the population. "In order to enhance the awareness of people in the issues of family planning and promotion of contraception as the method of prevention of abortions and preservation of women's reproductive health we conduct various campaigns, such as the Contraception Day", she said.
