There were 3,016 solid domestic waste landfills in Kazakhstan in 2023 with only 20% meeting ecological and sanitary regulations, Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Yerlan Nyssanbayev told a briefing at the central communications service.
Some 4,5 million tons of household waste is collected in Kazakhstan every year. Most of the waste is buried at solid domestic waste landfills due to a lack of separate waste collection, and insufficient sorting and recycling capacities.
Under the concept of Kazakhstan’s transition towards a green economy, 100% of the population should be covered with waste collection and disposal services by 81% and the country should bring waste recycling from 24% to 40% by 2030.
