ALMATY. KAZINFORM - Almaty has hosted an international scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN Office in Kazakhstan organized the event. Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Galim Mutanov noted that the date of the conference was chosen not accidentally - 2 March 1992 session of the UN General Assembly unanimously admitted Kazakhstan to the organization. Thus our country became the 168th member-state of the UN. Today the number of the UN member-states reached 193. The first permanent representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the United Nations, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Akmaral Arystanbekova stressed the special role of Kazakhstan in the UN mission. The conference addressed the role of the UN in maintaining peace and security in the world, sustainable development, environmental security, promotion of human rights and democratic values, as well as enhancement of cooperation with Kazakhstan. Particular attention was paid to the idea of establishing a regional center of the United Nations (hub) in Almaty. It is notable that he idea was first proposed by the Head of State at a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in September 2011.
