2024 Olympics - Boxer Nurbek Oralbay defeats Australian Callum Peters in Round of 16
Kazakhstani Nurbek Oralbay celebrates his win at the 2024 Paris Games, Kazinform News Agency reports citing the National Olympic Committee.
The Kazakh boxer defeated Callum Peters from the Australian team in Men’s 80kg Preliminaries.
The Round of 16 fight ended with the score 3:2 in favor of Oralbay by a split decision of judges.
Nurbek Oralbay is a silver medalist of the 2018 Asian Youth Boxing Championships, and a gold medal winner of the 2018 AIBA Youth World Championships. In November 2022, he clinched a bronze medal at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan in men’s 80kg. In May 2023, he claimed champion’s title at the 2023 IBA Men's World Amateur Boxing Championships .
Nurbek has a twin brother Aibek Oralbay, who is also a boxer competing in 92kg weight division.
This is the first-ever set of boxing twins to represent Kazakhstan at the Olympic Games.
Both brothers secured their Olympic berths at the World Qualifying Tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy, held in early March. Aibek secured a berth for Paris after beating American Jamar Talley 5-0 in the 92kg quarterfinal, and Nurbek got his berth having eliminated Kelyn Cassidy of Ireland in the 80 kg quarterfinals bout.
On July 28, Aibek Oralbay knocked down Nigerian boxer Olaitan Adam Olaore to make it to the Paris Games quarterfinal slated for August 1. He will fight against Azerbaijan's Loren Berto Alfonso Domínguez.
