Visibility plunged below 50 meters at the airport early Thursday when international departures were in full swing.

Some aircraft waited for a few hours at the holding point on the taxiways and had to return to the parking bays due to low visibility. Massive congestion caused by runway closure further worsened the delay, which lasted from one to six hours.

North India has been hit by a wave of coldness over the past few days with heavy fog descending after mid-night.
