Almaty. December 18. KAZINFORM - 18 December is International Migrants Day.
18 December 1990, the UN General Assembly adopted the international convention on protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families. 4 December 2000, the UN General Assembly appointed 18 December as International Migrants Day.
The decision to observe this day was made taking into account the increasing number of migrants in the world. The Assembly underscored the need for taking further steps to ensure the protection of migrants' rights and fundamental freedoms.
The International Migrants Day is observed in many countries, by intergovernmental and public organizations through dissemination of information on human rights and basic freedoms of migrants, through various actions and workshops explaining laws on migrants' rights. On this day, international community is called on to pay more attention to the growing number of migrants, who are in a fix far away from home and seeking help and protection. Today, 1 in 35 people on the planet is a migrant living and working outside his home country.
