Regardless of vote results, NPP construction referendum will become landmark event, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev

The forthcoming referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan will become one of the pivotal events over the years of independence and boost the country’s development, Head of State, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, addressing the II republican forum of deputies of maslikhats of all levels, Kazinform News Agency cites the Akorda press service.

The President said regardless of the vote results, the referendum will become a landmark event. In a couple of days, people will decide on the construction of the nuclear power plant at the nationwide referendum. The referendum is another testament to the sweeping changes that occurred in Kazakhstan over the past five and another testament to the development of the listening state concept. If people vote for the construction this project will be the largest in the history of Independent Kazakhstan.

The Head of State said the nuclear power plant will ensure the country’s sustainable growth for the coming decades and strengthen energy sovereignty.

The construction of the nuclear power plant is a long-term project that will ensure the country’s sustainable progress for decades and strengthen the country’s energy sovereignty, give an impetus to the various economic sectors, science and education, and will contribute to the generation of a wide array of engineers and multidisciplinary specialists, the President said. 

The Head of State highlighted the significance of the participation of each Kazakhstanis in the democratization process.

As previously stated, Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the decree to hold a national referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant on October 6, 2024.
